The New Supreme Court Appointee's Confirmation May be in the Hands of a North Dakota Senator

President Donald Trump introduced Brett Kavanaugh to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy Monday evening. Now it's up to the Senate to confirm or deny the appointment.

Renée Cooper tells us how the outcome may just depend on a vote from North Dakota.

These days, the confirmation process for a Supreme Court Justice is riddled with attention from special interest groups.

Today, outside Senator Heidi Heitkamp's Bismarck office a group gathered to call on the Senator to confirm Brett Kavanaugh as the new Supreme Court nominee.

Former North Dakota Legislator Bette Grande says, "We're here to say, 'You know what, we as North Dakotans, we back you. We're here for you, we want you to confirm Kavanaugh, because this is the right choice. He follows the values you said you wanted in North Dakota.'"

The majority of this crowd was a part of Susan B Anthony List.

Vice President of Government Affairs for Susan B Anthony List, Marilyn Musgrave explains, "We are a pro-life organization that elects representatives that will work to enact pro-life laws."

Although President Trump vowed not to ask prospective nominees about their stance on Roe Vs. Wade, abortion is a central issue in the decision on both sides.

Heitkamp is one of a few moderate senators the nation is watching closely in securing Kavanaugh's nomination. The Senator says she takes this job very seriously.

In a statement released this morning, Heitkamp said, "I have no doubt that many members of Congress and outside groups will announce how they stand on the nominee before doing their due diligence and instead, just take a partisan stand. But that isn't how I work."

She adds, "An exhaustive and fair process took place for Justice Gorsuch, who I supported, and it should and must take place again now."

With Republicans holding a narrow majority in the Senate, swing voters like the North Dakota Senator could make or break this nomination.

Senator John Hoeven also released a statement, saying "Judge Kavanaugh is an excellent choice for the Supreme Court."

Hoeven says the federal appeals court judge has a deep respect for a strict interpretation of the constitution.
