New crisis center facility set to open in Dickinson

Dickinson's Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Center is preparing to open a new facility to help people in need of assistance and this upgrade has been long overdue.

The center helped nearly 900 people from October of last year to the end of September of this year.

.". . . that is different from if we were to count the calls, because we field thousands of calls a year, " said Darianne Johnson, Executive Director Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Center.

The center offers everything from a 24 hour crisis hotline to shelter for people in need

"We help victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking homelessness, and we provide these services to men as well," said Johnson.

Savannah Norberg a domestic abuse victim who is receiving assistance from DVRCC said, "They have helped me by going to court hearings and helped me apply for crime victims compensation, which has helped with my medical bills".

Norberg is just one of the many clients the center has helped this year.

"I was in an emotionally abusive relationship. It ended up with him stabbing me multiple times in front of our child".

Over DVRCC's forty year history its coverage area has grown, offering assistance to people in eight counties (Stark, Dunn, Golden Valley, Hettinger, Bowman, Slope, Adams, Billings).

"The nearest place to go would be Bismarck. Many times people who access our services don't have vehicles," said Johnson.

To assist with its growing numbers, DVRCC is preparing to open up a new facility that will allow them to offer safe shelter for up to 28 people at a time instead of 18, and the facility will cost about $3.3 million.

The project was funded through state- local- and county dollars- and donations.

" We have had so much help from the community, and we have had people adopt rooms," said Johnson.

From her own personal experience, Norberg said it is money well spent.

"I'm back to work. My court case is officially over, and my daughter is doing great".

The new Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Center  facility is expected to open sometime before Christmas.
