New summer college baseball league creates team in Dickinson

This summer, college baseball is coming to Dickinson via the Expedition League, a brand-new summer collegiate baseball organization similar to the Northwoods League.

The team name for the Dickinson franchise will be the Badlands Big Sticks, in reference to President Theodore Roosevelt's quote, "Speak softly and carry a big stick."

When asked why the new league selected Dickinson as a home for one of the franchises, Assistant GM Daphne Drossart said, "It's a great community. I think [the league and franchise] is something that the community can really get behind. There's a need for a team like this. It's going to be a great family entertainment."

The team colors will be red, white and navy blue, and the team will play 32 home games at Dakota Community Bank & Trust Ballpark, the same field where the Dickinson High Midgets and Dickinson Roughriders play ball.

The Expedition League includes eight teams, which are listed below:

North Dakota: Dickinson, Minot

South Dakota: Aberdeen, Pierre, Rapid City, Spearfish

Nebraska: Gering, Hastings

The franchise's first game will be May 25, 2018.
