Local cross country teams are preparing for the 39th Annual Girls State Cross Country Meet and the 57th Annual Boys State Cross Country Meet on Oct. 28 at Bjornson Golf Course in Valley City, N.D.
Legacy will arrive in Valley City as the topped ranked boys team. The Sabers have held the position for most of the season. This year, the Sabers captured their first region title in school history.
"We have some really good leaders who have developed and we're running a lot better than we ever have," Andrew Reichenberger-Walz said, "so it's an exciting time."
"We've come ready to practice every day," Beau Brannan said, "super positive, and workouts have been really good."
Right behind Legacy sits Century. Last year's Class A state championship hasn't won a meet, but finished second several times. The Patriots also boast the top runner in the WDA, Evan Sayler.
Ryan Kohler was on last year's state title team and isn't ready to give up the crown.
"Being able to do it two years in a row," Ryan Kohler said, "it would just be amazing. Knowing that in my life I would have two state championships and be apart of that. It's a great thing."
On the girl's side, Bismarck High comes in as the third best team, according to the last coach's poll.
The Demons have won four times this season, including Oct. 14 in Williston for the WDA Championship.
Coach Scott Reichenberger said the Demons would pull an upset if they were to win the title, but he has plan in the place to pull off the unthinkable.
"I think if each of our girls took the best race they ran this year and we did it on the same day," Bismarck girls coach Scott Reichenberger said, "I think that would put us right there. I'm not guaranteeing a win, but I would take that because it give us a real good shot."
The Class A girls start the state championship at 11:00 a.m. followed by the boys at 11:45 a.m.
The Class B girls begin at 2:00 p.m. and the boys starting running at 2:45 p.m.
