Coll FBall: Nov. 8 - Soarin' with the Blue Hawks

Two weeks ago, the Dickinson State football team locked up the North Star Conference and a playoff berth. So with an open date last week and a winless team on the schedule for Saturday, you might think the Blue Hawks have nothing to play for, but think again.

The North Star conference champs come into Saturday's game ranked 12th in the NAIA polls. Programs ranked in the top eight earn a first round home playoff game.

"Depends on where the rankings fall," head coach Pete Stanton said. "If the top eight teams put in the minimum bid, then they would get a home game and at this point we wouldn't have a home game."

The Hawks will have to fight the urge to scoreboard watch, as DSU knows their outdoor, home field would provide a unique advantage.

"We're going to have to be playing in it," senior wide receiver Seth Ewoniuk said. "It's November, so get ready for the snow because it's here and it's here to stay for a while."

The most likely scenario is that the Blue Hawks finish outside the required ranking for a home playoff game, which leaves destination up in the air.

"We're not really sure where we would go if we win," Stanton said. "We know that we have to take care of business this week. If we take care of business, we'll find out on Sunday."

This week, Dickinson State faces a winless team in Mayville State. So a victory will not impress the voters.

"We're just going to take care of our business this week," Ewoniuk said, "and whatever happens, happens. We're going to come out here and hopefully get a win against Mayville. Then let the voters decide where we go."

With the playoffs looming in just over a week, Dickinson State's number one goal is player health.

"Last week was a good week to do that," Stanton said. "We were off last week and we held a number of our guys out of practice.

Nov. 11, is the final regular season home game for DSU. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. MST.
