Coll FBall: 9/27 Soarin' with the Blue Hawks

Dickinson State University's football recruiting pipeline stretches beyond the Peace Garden State and reaches across the Pacific Ocean in to Hawaii.

Una Masaniai was tailor made to be a grinder in the trenches.

"I just love the contact," Masaniai said. "Playing rough growing up, getting run over, get back up and do it again. I just liked doing that."

The senior defensive lineman has enjoyed the contact sport in his home state of Hawaii, at a junior college in California, and for more than a year now at DSU.

The decision to move halfway across the country seems like a big step, but Una felt comfortable knowing a cousin was already at DSU.

"[It was] the ending of the summer, like two weeks before the first game," Masaniai said. "He hit me up and told me to come over here, and I was like 'Yep, I'm on my way.'"

And it turned out that DSU was a great fit for him-- weather aside, that is.

"Love the place, man," Masaniai said. "Hate the cold, though."

But it's a small price to pay for a collegiate experience that Una calls a truly wholesome one.

"They're making me more like a man through the game, teaching me how to be a better player and a better role model."

The Blue Hawks play at home this Saturday against Presentation College.
