A commitment to success. That's what the St. Mary football team says separates them from teams in the past.
The Saints have outscored their opponents 361- 87 and are undefeated thus far in the season. Their success didn't start at game one but in day one of summer.
(Dan Smrekar, Head Coach) "I think the commitment to being good that this group has done in the off-season to get ready. They've really invested a lot of time in the off-season to be good, so I think that they are just really committed to it."
(Cole Gendrau, Jr. QB) "Just what we did all summer, what we do everyday in the weight room is coming together. Everyone wants to be here. A lot of focus and a lot of discipline and encouraging our scout team because they make us better."
Sounds like a pretty tight ship and the reason the Saints are sitting at the top of the rankings. Going into playoffs, there is a target on their back, but Coach Smrekar says that his team is just focusing on taking care of business in-house.
(Dan Smrekar, Head Coach) "You know, we don't talk about that a lot. What we talk about is just how to get better and play well because the teams in the playoffs are the better teams. Every week that you advance to the playoffs, the teams get better. You just to be ready to play and play well, and hope you don't beat yourself."
The Saints won their first state title in 2013, then turned it back-to-back with title in 2014 and are hoping to bring the title back to Bismarck.
