North Dakota is one of the most popular states in the nation to start a new business.
That's according to the latest data from the Kauffman Index, which studies "startup activity" across the country.
It says that in a given month, about one in every 400 adults in the state becomes an entrepreneur.
So why are people building their businesses in North Dakota?
Tim Olson spoke with a budding small businesswoman to find out.
(Deb Peery, Nature's Nook Children's Toys & Books) "I didn't know how to pronounce 'Bottineau'."
(Tim Olson, KX News) When Deb Peery moved from southern California to North Dakota, she had some learning to do.
(Peery) "Coming from a county of three million people to a community that was about the size of my daughter's high school in California."
(Olson) She moved to become a pastor at United Parish in Bottineau. And she did that for seven years.
Then last year...
(Peery) "Things started shifting in my life, from being a full-time pastor to wanting to take a different direction."
(Olson) ...She and her husband decided to take a chance.
(Peery) "For years I'd told my husband, 'We need a specialty toy store in Minot.'"
(Olson) A career change.
(Peery) "We could go anywhere. Do we go to the west coast where my family is? Do we go to the east coast where my daughter is?"
(Olson) But the Peerys decided to launch their toy store venture - first in Bottineau, and then, as of May, here in Minot.
She says there's a sense of solidarity among small business owners in the area.
(Peery) "All of us together are providing this local shop environment that is foundational for lifting up a community."
(Olson) Peery says she ignores the negativity.
(Peery) "Everyone's like, 'Oh! It's a downward economy, everybody's pulling out!' I'm like, no. Families are here. Children are growing up here. They need this."
(Olson) For Deb and Dave Peery, North Dakota is the perfect place to play.
