Equifax Data Breach: Are You Safe?

143 million Americans could be affected by the recent Equifax data breach.

Nearly a quarter of a million of those people affected could be in North Dakota.

Alexus Arthur reports on what do to next to see if you were affected and to make sure you are protected.

"It makes me angry." said a ND Resident.

Everyone is at risk.

"The federal trade commission is saying that you know they're getting names, social security numbers, even some credit card numbers." said Perry Olson, First International Bank.

The breach has many Americans worried about their personal information being in anyones hands.

"I'm kind of scared." said a ND Resident.

"Nervous" said a ND Resident.

"They have a lot of information so I mean the key is and it's always the key is just paying attention to your credit file." said Olson.

There is a way to find out if your information has been compromised.

"I think the best tool is the federal trade commission." said Olson.

"Do you normally check your credit? No. So now because of this do you think you would? More often than the usual." said ND resident.

On that website, you can click the link, equifaxsecurity2017.com and that will bring you to a new page.

"I think I'm going to have to go check that out." said resident.

After that, you need to scroll to the bottom and click potential impact and that will bring to another page, where you will then click the big red box, check potential impact.

"We got to pay attention." said resident.

That's when you will type in your last name an the last 6 digits of your social security number and select continue.

"Once that information is out there and the bad guys have your personal information, pretty much anything is possible." said Olson.

Then, it will tell you if your data has been potentially compromised or not.

"When you can be on top of that stuff all the time, it's just going to make the process down the road a lot easier." said Olson.
