Dickens Festival Returns to Garrison

Garrison, ND - For many people in the region, the Christmas season doesn't get going without a trip to Garrison.
The town hosts the Dickens Village Festival each year and calls itself the Christmas Capitol of North Dakota.

Jim Olson was there this week to see how volunteers were getting ready for the 24th annual festival.

Dick Messerly has been part of every Dickens Festival.

(Dick Messerly, Dicken Festival President) 2540 "24 years. That's why I have this grey hair."

But he's not complaining as he and others work to get ready for another year of turning Garrison into a Victorian-era town for the next few weekends.

(Dick Messerly, Dicken Festival President) 2550 "We have people that come back year after year and say this is the way we get our Christmas started."
(McKaila Matteson, Garrison CVB Director) 3020 "It has brought a lot of people to Garrison, has put our name on the map, and makes us enjoy the Christmas season."

One favorite attraction is the Queen Elizibus - a double-decker bus that ferries visitors around town - and even out into the countryside.

(Dick Messerly, Dicken Festival President) 2345 "We're gonna wash the whole thing, get it all cleaned up for another year, make sure it's all fueled up and ready to roll."

But that's just one feature of the event - there are performances of "A Christmas Carol" - the event that actually got the festival started back in 1994 - plus street vendors, a Dickens market, and something new too...

(Dick Messerly, Dicken Festival President) 2450 "We have new things - reindeer coming, Sunday is family day with a magician for entertainment, live reindeer, free carriage rides, and kids love to ride the double decker bus."
(McKaila Matteson, Garrison CVB Director) 3000 "It's given us the name of the Christmas Capitol of ND and I think we've played that out well and we attract people from all over to come to the Dickens Festival."

The Dickens Village Festival happens this Friday through Sunday, and then the following two Fridays and Saturdays in Garrison.
