Bus Donation Aids Patients at Rural Medical Center

Harvey, ND - A contribution from a former patient is helping current patients at a North Dakota hospital and nursing home.

Jim Olson was in Harvey as the four-wheel donation began making a difference in the lives of many people.

(Peg Bell) "I think it's an extremely generous gesture of George.

Peg Bell is talking about George Litke - he donated the money that paid for this shiny new bus that was christened this week.

"Welcome to the maiden voyage of the St. Aloisious Medical Center bus."

But it's what happened before the bus got rolling that makes these wheels so special - the bus is able to transport several people whether they can walk or climb stairs or not.

"Alright Peg we're going to go up."

It's equipped with a motorized ramp to board people with walkers

"Almost like going to the fair!" "It is!"

Or in wheelchairs

"OK, are we ready?"

The ability to welcome people of all abilities is important - but so too is the ride itself

(Peg Bell) "Sitting inside all day can be very tedious. And to get out and see what people are doing is interesting."
(Loretta Schilling) "I think it's pretty nice to be able to have something to get out in."
(Gail Grondahl, Nursing Home Director of Nursing) "I can't even explain how exciting this is. I've been a nurse for so many years here and I'm glad to see this happening. They'll be able to go to ball games..."
(Jim Olson, KX News) "Who will you cheer for?"
(Lorraine Meland) "I suppose Harvey!"
(Gail Grondahl, Nursing Home Director of Nursing) "Even farmers like to go out to the fields to see the corn harvest, the bean harvest..."
(Lorraine Meland) "Very comfortable."

George Litke's donation was in honor of all St. Aloisous did for his wife Ruth in her final years - after suffering a stroke in Texas.

(Kathy Flagen, Relative of George Litke) "Ruth did so much better in Harvey than she did in Texas and I think that is why he wanted to give back to Harvey too."
(Lorraine Meland) "Beautiful bus."
(Gordon Felchle) "I think it's going to be good. Really good."

(Jim Olson, KX News)
It sounds like the idea is well received.

(Lorraine Meland) "You aren't still taking pictures are you?"

(Jim Olson, KX News)
Well, I'm done now - but I did have fun riding the bus!

The bus is just one part of George Litke's donation - the medical center was also able to purchase many pieces of new furniture for the facility.
