New Medical Center Ready for First Patients

Bismarck, ND - After years of planning, a new medical center is ready for patients.

Hazen celebrated the opening of its new medical center.

The Sakakawea Medical Center dates back over 7 decades. Now, after some much needed upgrades,  the new facility consists of a 13-bed critical access hospital and a 34-bed basic care facility.

"This town does such a great job of just investing in the community. The community members volunteer, whenever you need anything, they're the first to offer to help," Director of Patient Care Marcie Shulz said.

Schulz made the transition from the old location to this new facility.

"Oh this just makes it so much fun. It's almost like having a new job. Just being able to be here and work in this environment is so cool."

The med center CEO says after months of planning, the reward was worth the work.

"We're just so pleased that our staff can provide services now at a state of the art facility and be here for years to come, for generations to come," CEO Darrold Bertsch said.

And although the new facility is not much bigger, it puts the space they do have to use in better ways.

"The older facility had a lot of inefficiencies. If you looked at it, our ER was in a separate area than our nurses station. This allowed us to work effectively. It brought all of our nurses into one central area, whether it be OR, ER, or the nursing floor, we're able to work together," Schulz said.

The hospital CEO hopes the new center will improve the Hazen economy and be another reason to move to town.

Sakakawea Medical Center is a state-designated Level five trauma center and employs more than 130 people.
