Elementary raises nearly $600 worth of coins

Finding spare change in between couch cushions may not amount to much. But when an entire school does it, it quickly adds up.

Ft. Lincoln Elementary participated in Coins for a Cause for the 50th day of school. It's all to benefit Welcome House - a homeless shelter serving the Bismarck-Mandan community. All the students had to do was gather whatever change they had. And they raised nearly $600.

"In the end, I think the big picture was that all we have to do is give just a little bit, and when we put it all together, we can make a huge difference. So, $600, or almost $600, was pretty amazing," said first grade teacher Amy Meschke.

Meschke said the idea came from the schools math committee as a good way for the students to use their math skills while also helping out the community.
