Combine catches fire during harvest near Wilton

Combine catches fire during harvest near Wilton. A local farmer’s sunflower harvest was interrupted when his combine caught fire Saturday evening.

Gary Speten says he was in his combine harvesting sunflowers south of Wilton around 6:00 p.m. on Saturday when a red light on the dashboard signaled fire in the engine.

He exited the machine safely and notified emergency officials of the blaze. The Wilton Fire Department and North Dakota Highway Patrol responded to the scene. Wilton Fire Chief J.D. YoungBird says he expects the fire, fueled by diesel and harvested sunflowers, to burn through the night.

No one was injured in the incident.
