Schools have been looking for a healthy alternative when it comes to birthday snacks.

Some schools in Bismarck put in a birthday menu option. This menu would get rid of unhealthy snacks and give students some new, fun choices. On their birthday, students have the choice to have extra computer time, give the class an extra recess, have lunch with their teacher or even have a dance party in class. Bismarck School's dietician, Joan Knoll, says the "new" birthday menu has been a success.

"This way, it puts less pressure on the parents too. And then also the kids love it because they're responsible then for having their whole class have an extra recess. And they think that's pretty cool" says Joan Knoll.

Prairie Rose elementary school started the birthday snack alternative about 6 years ago.
