AARP and YMCA Collaborate for Retired Community

Bismarck - To empower, and generate mental and physical engagement...

That's the goal of several new programs coming to the area for retired people.

Happening now...Emily Medalen is live to explain how this all came to be.

The YMCA has partnered with AARP with an idea to bring more options to the community for middle-aged citizens.

Last night a meeting was held to put all of these options into place - and they all start very soon.

Every week, there will be different options directed at the 50 plus age group.

Events like "Coffee and Conversation," "Walking Wednesdays," even art and cooking classes to promote mental and physical wellness.

One board member says she's excited to see fresh programs for this demographic.

"To really encourage people to be more mindfully aware as we grow and our stages and phases of life change. Just the opportunity for them to also, kind of network with other people that might be a stage behind them, or a stage ahead of them, and just kind of learn and grow with each other, and from each other,"says April Robinson, Regional Group Fitness Director.

The first event kicks off today.

There's a "Walking Wednesday" event starting here at the Y at 5:30, and you don't have to be a member to join in.
