Natural DIY cleaning solutions

Don't waste any more money on expensive and toxic cleaning supplies. Create your own natural solutions that are not only better for the environment and your wallet but are just as effective at cleaning. Plus, you can make them with ingredients you probably already have in your house!

Here are just a few of the many recipes out there:

All-Purpose Cleaner

9 Parts Water
1 Part White Vinegar
Few Drops of Dish Soap

Mix the water, vinegar and dish soap in a spray bottle. Spray the surface, wipe with a soft cloth or microfiber cloth and allow to dry.

Alternative All-Purpose Cleaner

1/2 Cup White Vinegar
2 Tablespoons Baking Soda
8-10 Drops of Tea Tree, Lavender or Lemon Essential Oil (optional)

Mix the vinegar, essential oil and a little bit of water together in a spray bottle first, then the add baking soda. Spray the surface, wipe with a soft cloth or microfiber cloth and allow to dry.

Microwave Cleaner

White Vinegar
Lemon Juice

Mix some vinegar and lemon juice in a small microwaveable cup (exact amounts do not matter here). Heat in the microwave for 2 minutes. Leave the door closed for an extra couple minutes. Open the door and wipe down the sides with a soft cloth or sponge.

Stainless Steel Cleaner

1 Part Vinegar
1 Part Water
Olive Oil (optional)

Mix the vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray the surface and wipe with a soft cloth of microfiber cloth. Once dry, rub a little bit of olive oil on the surface for a polishing effect (optional).

Window Cleaner

1/4 Cup Vinegar
2 Cups Water
1/2 Teaspoon Natural Dish Soap (optional)

Mix the vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray the surface, scrub with a gentle cloth or sponge if needed, and squeegee off.

Drain Cleaner

1/4 to 1/2 Cup Baking Soda
1/2 Cup White Vinegar
Couple Drops of Lemon Essential Oil (optional)

Sprinkle the baking soda down the drain first, then the white vinegar. This will create a fizzing effect. Add a couple drops of essential oil for a nice clean smell. Let the mix sit in the drain for about an hour then pour down boiling hot water. Use a "snake" or repeat the process again if needed.

Toilet Cleaner

1/2 Cup Baking Soda
10 Drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil
1/4 Cup White Vinegar

Pour the baking soda and essential oil into the toilet first, then add the vinegar. Scrub the sides while the mixture fizzes. Flush once done.

Tile Cleaner

1 Part Water
3 Parts Baking Soda

Mix the water and baking soda together to create a paste. Apply to the grout of the tile. Let sit for 15-20 minutes. Scrub with a toothbrush or similar and rinse.

Carpet Cleaner

Baking Soda
1 Tablespoon Natural Dish Soap
1 Tablespoon White Vinegar
2 Cups Warm Water

First sprinkle the carpet with baking soda and let sit for awhile before vacuuming it up. Then mix the dish soap, white vinegar and water together and dampen the area. Blot with a soft or microfiber cloth until stain lifts. Allow to dry.

Hardwood Floor Cleaner

1/4 - 1/2 Cup White Vinegar
1 Gallon Warm Water
1/8 Cup Natural Plant-Based Liquid Soap (optional)
2-3 Drops of Lemon Essential Oil (optional)

Mix the vinegar, water, liquid soap and essential oil in a bucket. Use a sponge mop and mixture to clean the surface. Allow to dry.
